ABOUT DENTAL

Dentistry is known as the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of conditions, disorders, and diseases of the hard and soft tissues of the teeth, jaw (mandible), maxillofacial area, the oral cavities, and the other associated structures in the mouth and their effects on our body. Dentistry is one of the parts of stomatology. It is a known fact that for the overall well-being, dentistry plays an important role. Doctors in this profession are called dentists. Other people who are connected with dental services in one or the other way include dental hygienists, dental therapists, dental assistants, and dental technicians.

In medical terms, people who diagnose, provide treatment, and deal with the prevention of different diseases of the maxilla, face, and mouth are known as dentists and their study is known as dentistry.

Surgery

Dentistry generally includes very significant practices connected with any type of oral cavities. Generally, people opt for dental surgery for the treatment of their teeth. Decayed teeth are usually filled using dental amalgam, dental porcelain, expensive or cheap metals, and dental composite. The most specialized dental surgeries are maxillofacial and oral surgeries. However, the process of dental care is not restricted to just dental clinics. Dental surgeons, sometimes, prescribe different devices, medications, and x-rays to their patients to use at home or office.

Oral diseases (bilateral odontogenic keratocysts) and abnormalities (various unerupted teeth) should not be taken lightly, since they can lead to many disease such as neural, systemic, and such other diseases. Most of the general practitioners in this line perform prosthetic, restorative, endodontic therapy, exodontias, and periodontal therapy along with examinations.

Dentists, who are not dental surgeons but are regular practitioners, are comfortable even with treating very complex cases, placing dental implants, and extracting the wisdom tooth that is also known as third molars. It is important for all dentists to achieve expertise up to a particular degree in several disciplines to attain graduation from a dental school and go on to become a certified dentist.

Prevention

As mentioned before, the requisites of dental care are not just restricted to dental clinics and dental services. There are several measures that are to be taken by the patient himself in order to ensure suitable dental care. For instance, dentists often prescribe a proper hygiene means for brushing the teeth in a proper way and flossing, tooth polishing, and fluoride for the prevention of different problems associated with teeth. However, excessive brushing is also harmful for teeth. It can cause pain and damage the gums. There are specific plastic materials called dental sealants that are applied to teeth to prevent them from decaying. Casein derivatives and xylitol (bacteriostatic), although less used, are other preventive agents available for the safety of our teeth. Products like Cavistat BasicMints can also be used to prevent dental caries.

Along with general dentistry, one can specialize in 9 other recognized dental fields in countries like Australia, US, and Canada. In order to specialize in a particular field, one requires having proper training in advanced graduate program or residency. After completing residency or an advanced graduate program, one can avail of a certificate of the training in which one has specialized.
